Sydney or "Emerald City", the capital of New South Wales, is the oldest and
largest city in Australia and is built around the shores of one of the world's most
beautiful harbours. From its beginnings as a settlement for British convicts over
200 years ago, Sydney has grown and developed into a dynamic, cosmopolitan city of over 3
million people, and is one of the world's top tourist destinations. Sydney has something for everyone: miles of beaches,
from world-famous Bondi to pretty little Shelly Beach on the North Shore; world-class
cuisine that combines the very best of many cultures; historic pubs where you can buy a
"shout" for your new Aussie mates; city strolls; Harbour cruises; and more.

Beach Season Begins
It's spring ..... the days in
October are often warm and time has come for the first dip in the surf
this season, at any of the beaches here. These are patrolled 7 days a week,
from around 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., by lifeguards and volunteer lifesavers. It is advised not to
swim outside the areas marked by the flags and if one get's into trouble in the water then
one should not panic but just raise one's hand and wait to be saved. The other thing
is that the Sydney sun is fierce, and one should be weary about this. |
