This exclusive hotel, a 10-minute walk
uphill from The Rocks and George Street, is a turn-of-the-century beauty competing for
top-hotel-in-Sydney honors. Up there with the Ritz-Carlton Sydney for unadulterated style,
it's outfitted with antiques, objets d'art, and the finest carpets, wallpapers, and
draperies, and is renowned for its personalized service. Rooms are plush, quiet, and come
with all the modern amenities, including a CD player and a VCR. The huge bath is a great
place for a glass of champagne and some takeaway sushi. Some rooms have city views while
others look out over the harbor. If you don't fancy the 15-minute walk into town, then
take advantage of the hotel's free BMW limo service, which delivers guests to the central
business district on weekdays. The pool here is one of the best in Sydney: Note the
Southern Hemisphere constellations on the roof. The health club offers everything from
massage and beauty therapies to a free float in the flotation tank for early arrivals
coming in from overseas.
Dining/Entertainment: The Galileo
Restaurant offers very good food in an elegant candlelit atmosphere with silk wallpaper,
polished walnut furniture, and original Venetian etchings and Australian Impressionist
works of art. The Globe Bar feels like an old-world colonial English club.
Facilities: Chemical-free indoor
pool, sauna, steam room, flotation tank, health club, tennis courts, concierge, 24-hour
room service, newspaper delivery, nightly turndown, twice-daily maid service, dry
cleaning/laundry, business center.
