This new museum, across the large square
opposite the Circular Quay CityRail station and the ferry wharves, opened in December
1998. It's worthwhile to take a look inside just for the stunning architecture. Once
inside, I'm sure you'll be hooked on the interesting series of modern art objects
displayed on the ground floor, and the traveling exhibits on the third floor (the history
of chairs was the big thing in early 1999). The Djamu Gallery, on the second floor, has
four small rooms of Aboriginal and South Pacific items--the overspill from the Australian
Museum. Outside in the square is a cafe selling reasonably priced coffee, cakes,
sandwiches, and the like.
